WHAT'S YOUR BLOOD TYPE?

'Ello traitors! On the 26th of September we are proud to continue our life-saving partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) by welcoming their specialist What’s Your Blood Type team to the London Dungeon Tavern for their "What's Your Blood Type Event".

‘What’s Your Blood Type’ is an innovative event where staff and guests can find out their likely blood type and register to become a new blood donor.

The test itself takes about 5 minutes and all we need is few drops of blood from your finger. There are no big needles, we promise. This activity is especially important to identify vulnerable and rare blood types and to guide new donors through the registration process and answer any questions you might have about your blood type or the donation process. It only takes a few minutes to find out your blood type but can have a life-saving impact as each donation only takes one hour and can save up to three lives.

Guests will have the opportunity to find out their blood type at the end of your London Dungeon tour, in the Tavern.

Why blood donation is so important

Blood donation is an amazing gift to people who need it in an emergency or for on-going medical treatment, around 1.4 million units of blood are issued to hospitals each year, which is needed for transfusions to people with blood disorders, trauma emergencies, childbirth, during surgery, and in cancer treatments.

The NHS maintains a regular supply of all blood types to ensure the right blood is available to everyone who needs it and nearly 5,000 people are needed to give blood every day to meet the needs of hospitals and patients.

You can catch up on our previous collaborations with the NHS Blood and Transport team on Instagram including our very own Torturer and Plague Doctor and read more about blood donation here.

Sickle Cell Awareness month

September is Sickle Cell Awareness month, Sickle cell is the UK’s fastest growing genetic disorder and can affect anybody but is more common in patients of Black heritage. Sickle cell is a serious genetic disorder affecting the red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body.

Sickle cell patients need regular transfusions to help reduce and prevent a severe crisis which can cause loss of sight, organ failure and stroke and the complications can be fatal.

To get the best treatment, patients need blood which is closely matched. This is most likely to come from a donor of the same ethnicity which is why we urgently need new donors of Black heritage as they are more likely to have a rare blood sub type needed to help treat patients with sickle cell.
