New research by the thrilling London attraction reveals that more than a third of Brits (34%) think we should get to vote for the next King or Queen, and 31% would want to abolish the monarchy altogether!

But who would the nation want as the next King or Queen if they could vote for the monarch? The votes* are in...

  1. Sir David Attenborough
  2. Idris Elba
  3. Dame Helen Mirren
  4. Taylor Swift
  5. Sir Elton John
  6. Dame Julie Andrews
  7. Ant & Dec
  8. David Tennant
  9. Jude Bellingham
  10. Adele

Brits would feel safest in the hands of national treasure Sir David Attenborough, followed by jack of all trades, actor, rapper, singer and DJ Idris Elba, who they think could also add ‘King’ to his roster.

Girl power also prevails, as in third place comes Dame Helen Mirren, who previously stepped into the Queen’s shoes in the 2006 film, while others would even trust the American Queen...of pop, Taylor Swift, with the official role for the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms.

While many of those polled claim they would miss ‘nothing in particular’ if the monarchy fell (40%), others would miss the pageantry (24%), their faces on our bank notes (17%), and even new episodes of The Crown (7%). Other royal subjects claimed they’d miss the royal’s distinctive appearances, such as King Charles' big ears (7%), William's receding hair line (6%) and even King Charles' sausage fingers (5%).

After 364 continuous years of reign, 30% think the royals only have between 46-50 years left in power, while more loyal subjects predict we’ll have more than 50 years (16%). There's shaky ground for Prince William’s future as King, with 11% reckoning there’s only 6-10 years left of the monarchy.

Those who want to experience the end of the monarchy for themselves can head to the London Dungeon’s spine-chilling summer show Rotten Royals, which transports guests back in time to 1649 and the violent end of the reign of King Charles I – which resulted in the abolition of the British monarchy for 11 years after he was tried and executed for treason.

A London Dungeon spokesperson said: “We LOVE the royal family, as without them…we’d have no material! Sadly for Buckingham Palace, the same can’t be said for all of their subjects, with Sir David Attenborough a favourite to wear the crown instead. Luckily for the King, and us, if he plays his cards right, he’ll have the support of the British public for at least a few more years, unlike the original King Charles, whose disastrous reign resulted in the end of the monarchy...and his head in a basket!”

The new London Dungeon show, Rotten Royals, is open to the public now and is included in the standard ticket price.

Those brave enough to enter the depths of the London Dungeon, situated on the capital’s South Bank, will uncover unsettling tales of London’s darkest past and come face-to-face with spine-chilling historic characters including Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett herself.
