The York Dungeon, and our partner attractions and theme parks that form Merlin Entertainments Ltd, are committed to sparking positive change throughout our worldwide operations.
In the summer of 2022, with the support of an initiative launched by the York BID, we were able to source and replace all of our light bulbs with LED ones instead. This has had the impact of reducing our energy consumption throughout the building, and due to the much longer lifespan of the new bulbs, far less frequent replacing of light bulbs as well.
Taking part in this initiative with the York BID sparked exploration into what we can do to further reduce our energy consumption, and thus also reduce our carbon footprint.
In February of 2024 we underwent a carbon reduction assessment from the team at Green Economy and we are working towards further reducing our carbon footprint.
So far this has included a change in the way we operate our compressors resulting in less energy usage, and have replaced our fire extinguishers which were nearing end of life, with new P50 fire extinguishers. These have a 10 year life span, and they can be serviced annually by our own Technical team, meaning servicing contractors do not need to come to site to inspect them, removing any carbon emissions relating to their travel to and from site. And the extinguishers themselves can be fully recycled at the end of their 10 year life span.
The York Dungeon is committed to continuing to drive and discover practical solutions to make a positive impact.
